Badgers Short Mat Bowls

LAST UPDATE: 10th April 2010

GENERAL

The Badgers are a member of the Pembrokeshire Short Mat Bowls Association and affiliated to the Welsh Short Mat Bowls Association. The associations are respectively responsible for organising and selecting the Pembrokeshire and Welsh teams and arranging County and National Competitions.

The club currently has 17 members and has club nights Tuesday and Friday evenings during the winter dependent on match fixtures. One team plays in the "main league" and one team in the "presidents league". The season runs from early September till late April. During the summer there is usually bowling on Wednesday evening at 19.00.

LEAGUES 2008/2009

The Badgers teams finished the season in 5th position in the Main League and 4th in the Presidents League. This placed the Badgers teams in the top half of the two leagues, which is good considering the high standard of bowls played in the leagues. However, we failed to pick-up any trophies this season!

SEASON 2009/2010

At the AGM held in June 2009 a new Captain, Nigel Griffiths, was elected. Having thanked Joyce Howe for the last two years as Captain, Nigel also said he would do all possible to continue the improvements.

Badgers News

Another season almost over, although due to cup matches and rescheduled games, caused by the snow,  we will continue to the end of May.

For us the highlight of the season was the agreement by the Llanteg Hall Committee to allow us to reduce the size of the stage and therefore increase the size of our playing area. All the clubs have commented on this improvement, so thank you Llanteg.

After a very promising start to the season, things went down hill a bit! Not that this concerns us as “it’s all about taking part, not winning” Honest!

In the main league we finished fifth out of  ten and in the Presidents League we are likely to finish eighth or ninth out of thirteen.

We are still in the Ken Havard and Pauline Thomas Cups, quarter Finals, so hopefully……….

Aubrey Streeter, Dai Shanklin, Nev Ruff and Steve Dick won the South Pembs Shield

In the County and Red Card county competitions:-

Hazel Wadey and Nigel Griffiths won the Red Card pairs and went on to represent Pembrokeshire in the Welsh finals at Llandrindod Wells.

Jean John, Hazel Wadey and Ken Bellamy won the County Triples.

Aubrey Streeter, Nev Ruff and Steve Dick were selected for the County Team and the team were beaten in the finals.

Club nights during the summer will be arranged by Hazel and anyone interested in trying short mat bowls or already plays and wants a game should call Hazel on 01834 811411
