Llanteg Community Hall needs YOU to join your village activities
With public buildings in the village closing the Village Hall is now the centre of our community.
Have you thought of coming along to our meetings and supporting us?
The Hall is run by a small group of volunteers; but we tend to be the same people who are also in the Community Association and the History Society—so a lot of work often falls on a few shoulders.
There would be no pressure to join committees: but some new faces would be welcome and also generate a few ideas.
All our meetings are advertised in the press and on the village website and you would be made most welcome.
This year there will be no church fundraisers - so we have the opportunity of reorganising our December events—so please come along and give us some new ideas

CRUNWERE Mothers’ Union

Post-Christmas Lunch—this was held on 15th February at Cross Villa, Templeton, and fourteen members had a very enjoyable, rather belated, post-Christmas lunch.
On 3rd March we were treated to another very interesting and entertaining talk by Helen Williams, Ambassador for the Christian charity ‘Send a Cow’. Helen first visited exactly twelve months ago, when, unfortunately, more than half of our members were either away or too unwell to attend.
Helen was happy to come back and this time we all welcomed her. At the end of the meeting a collection of £23 was made to send to the RAF Association in memory of Vera Hendry, who was a much loved member of the branch.
On March 25th (Lady day) we welcomed a full member, Anne Mustoe, who was
enrolled by Rev’d Sarah Geach during the Eucharist at St Mary’s Begelly at 10am.
On May 5th the speakers are Majors Denise and Martyn Clements who are coming to talk about the work of the Salvation Army.
The Deanery Mothers’ Union Festival is at St Issells on May 11th.

Aerial View of Church
Toby Driver has, for the Royal Commission of Ancient Monuments of Wales, taken aerial shots of St Elidyrs, Crunwere. These are now on the website and blog (if we want to use them anywhere else we will have to pay as they are copyrighted). It is nice to have a record of the building and tower before anything happens to it.

Community Association
Environmental Workshops
Llanteg Community Association held Environmental Youth Workshops on the 16th and 17th April in the Old School Garden.
Sessions took place over the two day period with tutor-led activities including willow sculpture, weaving, spinning and bird box making.
The workshops were made possible by a grant from Communities First, an organisation based in Cardiff.
The monies forwarded to Llanteg Community Association from Communities First will also allow for a shed to be erected on the Garden site.
All activities were enjoyed by the young people who attended and many adults participated too, especially learning about the construction of willow sculpture and spinning.
If anyone in the area is interested in joining the Community Association group to help organise further activities please contact Madeline on 01834 831575.

Community Walk—2nd August
A community walk is planned in conjunction with Kiri Howell, National Park Ranger.
More information to follow—see press and website for details closer to the date.

Family Day— 29th August
It is hoped to hold a family day & barbeque in the summer at The Old School Garden. The date is provisionally set for 29th
August. All will be welcome to attend - posters will be up around the village and notices put in the newspapers under Llanteg News.

About your Village—Field Names
During 2002/03 the History Society were collecting field names—both from the 1842 Tithe Schedule and also those that existed within living memory to see how many had survived or changed.
We had some problems with farms being divided up because when you have only got one field with a house it does not really need a specific name any more!
However, many of the names were interesting, and a lot had remained unchanged, which was a surprise.
Along the top road (Ludchurch to Tavernspite) we had 3 Halfpenny Acre, there was also a York Field (after Yorke Glanville), and from 1842 the unusual Burning Walls (between Blaenhafod and Three Wells).
North of Furzy Park is a field called Peggy Rogers (as is the corner where the parish ends). Opposite Furzy Park was Piper’s Piece (1842) and at the Old Rectory (Crunwere House) were The Tanpits and King’s Piece.
Near Rigman’s Hill north of the church was Robin’s Park and along church lane was Smith’s Croft (1842), later changed to John Smith’s Croft, also a Frank’s Field next to it (anything to do with the late Frank James of Bevlin?).
Behind West Llanteg was Harper’s Park (now Harper’s Meadow) and west of West Llanteg was a mysterious field called something like ‘Hell & Jenks’ - which baffled us until we realised it was probably connected with the Ellen Jenkins mentioned on the 1911 Land Tax list!
At Llanteg Crossroads was a field called Carthorse Meadow (where The Meadow now stands).
To the north of Middleton was, and is, a field called The Break Fields. In 1842 the field in front of Sandy Grove was Potato Hay, whilst behind Rose Park was Welshman’s Mountain, now Trenewydd Mountain.
A field opposite Stanwell has been verbally called Black Vengeance, but we have found no written evidence so far.
North of Milton Lodge was, and is, Black Park, whilst a field south of Grassy Lane is called Jubilee for some reason.
These and other names we have recorded on a large parish map. If you know of any unusual names or know the reason why they were called a certain name, please let us know.

Llanteg Village Hall
Well done to Sue & Roy James who have cleared out the back store/lumber room of the Village Hall which can now be used for extra meetings—a great asset now that the hall is being used so much!

Kitchen Alterations
PAVS have awarded us a grant for alterations and a new doorway— to be spent within 12 months. This will mean that, once finished, we will have a doorway that will enable us to move freely between the kitchen, committee rooms and toilets without having to go through the main hall—a great help when it is being used by other groups.
We may apply for a grant to upgrade the kitchen units next year.

PAGE 9
Llanteg Village Hall
Hall Treasurer
We were sorry to lose the services of Wendy Jones, who has carried out the task so ably and enthusiastically for the last 14 years. Wendy said what a pleasure it was to see the Hall in its present state, newly decorated and with new tables and chairs and being used by so many and varied groups—she hoped that the Hall will continue to go from strength to strength. Wendy felt that she should step down as Treasurer but would like to remain on the Committee.
However we are pleased to have gained the services of Andy Webb of Furzy Park, who has now taken on the role— and we wish him every success. Along with his wife Ruth, who is the Minutes Secretary (plus the Newsletter proof reader), they add greatly to the running of the Village Hall.

Moving House
Roy James began the March meeting by thanking Roy Deverell, Hillcrest, who has been a member of the Committee for the past 25 years, for all his hard work and support. Members of the Committee wished him and Eileen well for their imminent house move to Weymouth. Eileen had also been a very active member of Crunwere W.I. when it had been in existence.
Before they moved Roy, Sue and Madeline presented Roy and Eileen Deverell with some wine and a brass plaque engraved with a picture of the Village Hall and words of thanks for Roy’s hard work and support over the past 25 years.
New Residents
We would also like to welcome Malcolm & Michelle Thomas and their children Hannah and Emily, who are now moving into Hillcrest—and hope they enjoy life in Llanteg.

A Tribute To…

Eileen Oriel (nee Mason & Allen)
It was very sad to hear of the death of Mrs Eileen Oriel who passed away on the 25th of October 2008 at Withybush Hospital, aged 85 years.
Eileen was born in Llanteg in 1922, and in her early life was an accomplished musician and taught music (piano), later she became organist at St Elidyr’s Church Crunwere (having had to walk to Tavernspite to catch the bus to Whitland for music lessons).
Eileen, of Ruelwall Farm, Llanteg, was married to James Edgar John Mason. John served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, and was tragically killed in action in June 1944, aged just 23.
Some time later Eileen married Howell Oriel, and they settled down at Whitland, later living at Goitre Farm, Amroth, which they farmed till 1976, when they retired to Kilgetty. After Howie’s sudden death in June 1987, Eileen stayed in Kilgetty, where she remained for the rest her days.
Throughout her life Eileen attended Crunwere, and later Begelly churches, and she was an enthusiastic member of the Mothers’ Union for over fifty years, and later the Golden Age Club.
Eileen also enjoyed travelling and holidays, and her love of music remained with her to the end of her life.
Some years back, I remember driving Eileen back to her home at Kilgetty after a Senior Citizens’ party in Llanteg, she was so full of life and appreciative of the chance to meet and chat with old friends.
I can’t help feeling what sorrow Eileen must have seen in her life, but still she remained a spirited, enthusiastic person, content with her life and that of her families.
Eileen will be sadly missed by Alan - Barbara - Vaughan - Derek and their families, but never forgotten.
Roy James

History Meetings
From May 2009 we will be holding meetings on the THIRD TUESDAY of each month at 7.30pm—and not on the third Monday as before.

11th Book
After receiving a grant from Awards For All Wales we worked through the winter on our fourth History Book (but this will actually be our eleventh publication!).
We aim to have this out later in the year to celebrate the History Society’s 10th Anniversary Year—so keep an eye out for posters and reports in the local papers, as well as the Llanteg website.

Old Letterbox at the Folly
This little postbox, whose aperture is too small to take Birthday cards and large envelopes, dates from the reign of King George V (1910-36) - so although not very practical it is nice to have it from a historical point of view.
I suppose this one is as small as the new monster one at the garage is large!

Talk in February 09
We had an interesting talk and slideshow on the Hywel Dda Centre, Whitland, given by Haydn Lewis and Ken Rees. Although we visited a few years ago we may have another trip there—keep a look out in the press and on the website.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR – TONY BRINSDEN
You will all by now have received your dreaded Council Tax demands. Due to a very poor Local Government settlement from the Welsh Assembly, a measly 2.9%, the Council Tax has had to rise by 4.2% which equates to a rise of £26.84p on a Band D property. I suppose we have to be thankful that there are to be no cuts in the front line services, for the rest of this financial year at least. The Leader of Council, Cllr John Davies, is still beating the drum that Pembrokeshire has the lowest Council Tax in Wales. This poor settlement will make it even more difficult to get any improvements carried out.
I have now had it agreed that "Unsuitable for HGV" signs will be erected on the Crosslands/Lime Road junction. The Council will not put a similar sign at the entrance to "Allens Lane", the byway which runs between Sea Breezes and Briarwood because, by virtue of its designation as a byway, it should be obvious to HGV drivers that it is unsuitable.
At a recent meeting of the Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee of
Pembrokeshire County Council senior members of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water gave a presentation and took questions on the general sewerage situation within the County. I was able to set out the situation in Llanteg as regards mains sewers, or rather the lack of them, and the fact that it is costing residents huge sums to keep their cesspits emptied. They did agree to look further at the situation when setting their next five year plan and budget. A point that they made rather forcefully was the fact that money is short and had to be used where it would be of the greatest benefit to the public and environment. They quoted a case of a village where a mains sewer had been installed at a cost of 1.6 million pounds and only three households eventually connected to it—therefore rendering it a white elephant.
For those parents who have children at Stepaside School you will be pleased to know that we have managed to obtain a grant of in excess of £300K from the Welsh Assembly for a "safer routes to school" initiative. Part of this money will be spent on improving the safety of the drop off/pick up zone at the school. Unfortunately Tavernspite School failed in their bid to obtain a grant under this initiative.
If anyone has any problems that they think I can assist them with then please do not hesitate to contact me, telephone 01834 831775 or e-mail mailto:brinsden-2@supanet.com.
Regards

Tony Brinsden

TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL
Tavernspite School continues to be a busy, thriving and growing school which features strongly in the local community.
Music and drama are great strengths of the school and in recent times the range and quality of productions performed to full and appreciative audiences reflect this.
At Christmas time the school performed Ebenezer-The Rock Musical, telling the story and
dramatic conversion of Ebenezer Scrooge. Bah Humbug! The children were simply outstanding and really showed off their wonderful talents.
Many Tavernspite children living in Llanteg village read lessons, sang or played musical instruments at the Llanteg Church Christmas Carol Service.
Farm Factor – At the end of the Christmas Term a ‘Farm Factor Competition’ based on ITV’s
X Factor was held at school. Many children (and staff!) performed a wonderful array of items to raise money to help ‘Give Poverty the Boot’. A very respectable £52.00 was raised for the
appeal.
To celebrate St. David’s Day a Noson Cawl a Chan (Cawl and Singing Evening) was held at the school. A week earlier an Eisteddfod was held at the school where the children entered musical, recitation and art and craft competitions to score points for their prospective houses. The children who gained first place at the School Eisteddfod performed their winning items at the Noson Cawl a Chan. At the end of the evening the Bardic Crown and Chair of the Eisteddfod were presented in true Welsh tradition.
Comic Relief – We had a brilliant day of fun and exciting activities including a talent show, staff spelling competition and dressing in pyjamas’ day in school on March 13th in aid of Comic Relief. The children and staff were fantastic and took part very enthusiastically to help raise the outstanding amount of £608.
The children took part in a very thoughtful and interesting assembly at the beginning of the day to understand the real reason behind Comic Relief.
Urdd Centre, Cardiff –In February twenty six of our Year 6 children enjoyed a residential visit to the Urdd Centre, Cardiff. The centre is located within the Millennium Centre at Cardiff Bay which makes all the attractions very accessible. Some of the visits and activities we enjoyed included: Techniquest, ten pin bowling, cinema, boat trip around Cardiff Bay, Norwegian Church where Roald Dahl was baptised, The Sennedd where we were spectators at a Welsh Assembly Government meeting with all Welsh Ministers including the First Minister Rhodri Morgan present and the Big Pit Colliery in Blaenavon in the South Wales Valleys. We packed a lot into three days and had a brilliant time.
Tavernspite School benefits from a strong emphasis on outdoor education, health promotion and eco-project work. Our children are, as a result, fit, healthy, appreciate the outdoor environment and are environmentally aware. To help develop our outdoor learning philosophy one of our teachers, Mrs. Molyneux, visited Sweden to learn more about the benefits and effective approaches to outdoor learning and outdoor education. Mrs. Molyneux had a very interesting time and we are looking at ways to use what she learnt to further develop our outdoor learning philosophy.
Eco-School of the Year award – For the second year running Tavernspite School has been shortlisted for the Eco-School of the Year Award. Several Year 6 members of the School Council and Eco-Committee travelled to the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, in March to attend the Eco-School of the Year national awards.
I am very proud to announce that Tavernspite School won first place at the award ceremony and received a beautiful wooden trophy, £500 cheque and the title ‘Eco-School of the Year'.
In October Tavernspite School was delighted to receive the Sustainable Schools Gold Award. It was presented in a special assembly by Cllr Huw George and Janie Pridham, Sustainable Schools Co-ordinator. We are among a very small number of schools within Pembrokeshire to receive this award.
I am grateful for this opportunity to share with you some of the events and successes of Tavernspite School in this newsletter. If you wish to know anything else please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Llanteg Bowls
Well, it's the end of another season for Llanteg Bowls Club.
We appear to have finished up in 6th position this year, which is one up from last year. Seven of us have entered the Ethel Barber Singles Competition at Heatherton on 18 April. For some it will be the first time they have had a go at competing, and I wish them all the best of luck.
Our competition days are always very friendly, social affairs and everyone enjoys them - whatever happens on the bowls front!
We have some friendly matches arranged for the summer season and plan to meet up with the Badgers! It is strange playing in 'our hall venue', but on different mats when we play 'away'.
Competition Update - Everyone who entered had a thoroughly enjoyable day. There was a much larger entry of over 50 this year, so there was not even time for a lunch stop between the matches, and we all had to fit in a quick sandwich where we could. Margaret, Rod, Jean, Mick and Ann Newman played some hard fought matches and although they all won some and lost some, did not progress further than the first round. Ann Robinson won all her matches, much to her surprise and delight, and progressed to the second round, as did Peter Walker. Ann was beaten in her match, but Peter won and then progressed to the quarter-finals where he finally met his match and was beaten. The final outright Singles Winner for 2009 was Gerry Hansford of Skrinkle Short Mat Bowls Club.
We are always ready to welcome new members and would be happy to see you on any Monday or Thursday evening at 7.00 pm. Please contact the Secretary on 01834 811160.
Ann Newman

PAGE 19
Badgers Bowls
We have now come to the end of another Bowling Season.
We came 5th again in the Main League and 4th in the Presidents League - one place higher than last year! However, as last season, we are still in two cup competitions - The Pauline Thomas and Ken Havard cups, so as last year we have high hopes of some silverware for our Trophy Cabinet.
In the County Competitions we did well with Stew Howe, Joyce Howe and Ken Bellamy reaching the Final of the County Triples, but unfortunately came second.
In the Red Card pairs Hazel Wadey and Ken Bellamy came second and in the Triples Aubrey Steeter, Neville Ruff and Steve Dick came third and both qualified to represent the County in the Welsh Finals at Llandrindod Wells. The Triples did well reaching the semi-finals but lost to the eventual winners.
In February some of our club members made the annual trip to Bodelwyddan to compete in a tournament and as in previous years returned with Trophies and prize money. The Triples were won by Neville Ruff, Gareth Richards (Letterston) and Steve Dick.
According to Neville he "Was Brilliant". Further Trophies and prize money were won by Joyce and Stewart Howe who won the Dawlish Open Pairs— well done everyone!
We have not yet held our annual mixed pairs tournament but hope to do so in the next few weeks. Most of our club members are
looking forward to a break from bowling - apart of course from the "Bowling Addicts".
Jean John

Congratulations to John and Hazel James on the birth of their first granddaughter, Lili.

Once again Tom Banner (Crofty Nursery), and Matthew Pilot (Crunwere Close), pupils of Ysgol Dyffryn Taf Whitland, impressed the judges with their idea for a solar powered radio controlled tug that would use sat. nav. to find its way around Heathrow.
Together with two other friends, the boys’ team is now in the final six—out of a total of 280 schools. They will travel to Heathrow in July for the finals.
(Their Design & Technology Club from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf was voted ‘Best in Wales’ for 2008 and in 2009 ‘Best in UK’.)

Congratulations to Harry Banner of Crofty who was presented with his red belt on April 4th at Tenby Leisure Centre. Harry trains with the Kilgetty Shotokan Karate Club.

Good luck to Chloe Whittock of Bevlin who will be representing Pembrokeshire in the Miss Wales competition to be held in Cardiff in July.

Did You Know? Wall Street— In the 1640s a basic picket and plank fence denoted plots and residences in the colony. Later the Dutch constructed a stronger stockade. A 12 foot wall of timber and earth was created in 1653 and, fortified by palisades, was a defence against Native American tribes, New England colonists, and the British. The wall was dismantled by the British in 1699—but the name lives on. In Dutch the word wal means rampart/fortification.
