FAREWELL TO ST ELIDYR’S CHURCH, CRUNWERE
5pm Sunday 2nd August 2009
We met at the gates of Saint Elidyr's Church, Crunwere, for a Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving to mark the closure of the building. Some forty people, church members and others connected with the church and graveyard, took part in a service of prayers and thanksgiving devised and led by the Reverend Sarah Geach. As the service drew to an end the church door was locked and the keys were handed to Rev’d Sarah by the churchwardens to be delivered to the Church in Wales. The service ended with the congregation singing the hymn Guide Me 0 Thou Great Jehovah. We left with mixed feelings, memories of the happy and sad times we have shared, and relief that we can now move forward. We wish to express our thanks to Sarah for all her hard work, and for the support and guidance we have received from her during this difficult time.
Mollie James, Churchwarden
Important Notice for those living at Crunwere
Sunday services are no longer held in the Village Hall at Llanteg, but now join with the other services held in the Benefice on

Closing Prayer and Blessing used at the last church service
Go in peace.
We go as one people.
We go as the loved community of God.
May the light you encountered in worship here
continue to shine on your path.
May the God that brought you here and kept you
go with you now to enfold and protect you.
And may we all, wherever we may go,
find in God our true dwelling place and home,
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be with you and all those you love,
now and always. Amen.

Easter 2009, 16th & 17th April - Children's Workshops
A successful two-day environmental youth workshop was held at the village’s Old School Garden. Seventeen young people attended the willow sculpture, bird box making and weaving workshops which were all very productive.
2nd Aug 2009—WALK & TALK - Llanteg – Amroth – Colby – Llanteg with Kiri Howell – Pembrokeshire Coast Community Ranger
On Saturday 2nd August 2009 Llanteg Community Association arranged a 'Walk & Talk' social event which commenced at 11.00am from the Old School Garden, Llanteg. Members of the association were joined by other members of thecommunity during the walk which proved to be very enjoyable, relaxing and informative.
The pleasant weather added to the occasion with Kiri Howell, Pembrokeshire National Park Community Ranger, providing an excellent summary during the walk with her very enthusiastic guidance. The walk progressed through Llanteg to Trellessy Road and along Factory Lane to Amroth. The 'clog' industry and indications of a possible Roman involvement some distance away were amongst the fascinating details explained by Kiri.
After a brief stay in Amroth for refreshments, the walkers (now approaching 20 in number) returned to Llanteg via Colby Gardens.
All who were involved agreed the walk was not only a valuable social occasion but it also provided an opportunity to test, and hopefully improve, physical endurance and to look at parts of our local area on foot at a more leisurely pace than we are familiar with.

Simple Fundraising for Village Hall
Jill Chatwin has kindly set up an account for Llanteg Village Hall for Easy Fund Raising. The web address is:-
http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/llantegvh
There is also a search engine that can be used at:-
http://www.llantegvh.easysearch.org.uk
You just need to go to the web page and set up a free account for yourself and then you can use the site. You use their search engine to get to sites such as Tesco, Amazon, Ebay (and numerous others) and a donation goes to the Village Hall.
How much can I raise?
It depends on how much you use the Web, but by making just 10 searches per day, you should generate around £20 a year for our cause.
Minibus Match - Getting Communities Moving
The idea is to match community groups and schools that have a minibus with groups that need one. Minibus owning groups get income from user groups. The scheme is open to any community group or not-for-profit organisation.

Send a Cow Fundraiser
23rd May 2009
Helen Williams, Ambassador for the Send a Cow charity, came along to Llanteg Hall to help raise funds for this worthy cause. Lots of bric-a-brac was donated, as well as cakes and books. The total raised was £150+. Thanks to all who supported the event.
Tables and Stage
New lightweight folding tables have now been bought for the hall — and the committee is most grateful for the generous donations made towards these by both Llanteg and Badgers bowling clubs.
The stage has also been reduced in size (thanks to the help from the Badgers) — thus giving the bowlers more room to play—so hopefully things will not be so cramped for them in future.

Battlefield Live at Llanteg
For parties and groups (over 7yrs) - infrared weapons.
This new business opened at Lavender Cottage to the west of the village in the summer and is open all year round, also running sessions from 4pm - 6pm weekdays during term time. There has been a lot of local interest in the few months that they have been open and many families from Pembroke and Haverfordwest have played. They do not do food but work with Crofty Nurseries and another local caterer if people have a requirement for food at parties etc. They look forward to a busy winter!

Lanteague Wood
(24.76 acres)
Have you visited it yet?
The site is set on the gently sloping upper and steep lower valley and plateau of a small stream. From the top there are views out to sea. Further down stream the valley sides are clothed in ancient semi-natural woodland, much of which is owned by the National Trust. The soil is peaty but is only about 6" to 1' deep. Beneath it is a solid rock layer.
The site was laid out as 4 equal fields plus the steep valley side. The fields are referred to as North, South, East and West fields. The North and East fields are improved and have had most of the surface boulders removed (possibly glacial erratics). The South and West fields are less improved. The West field is very wet with lots of rushes. This field had a pond but this has not lasted the five years since acquisition. The South field is quite dry and has numerous boulders. It is unlikely therefore that it has ever been ploughed. It has diverse flora and most of the centre of the field has been left unplanted. The Western edges of both the South and West fields drop away steeply towards the stream. The steep sides are dry and grazed by rabbits and now horses. The flora includes clover trefoil and scabious. There are occasional boulders and pockets of hawthorn and bramble, making the sunny banks good for invertebrates.
Taken from the Woodland Trust website—www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
It seems our little wood is very popular with dog walkers—and there is even a sign there telling you that if you do not bag your dog waste then to ‘Stick ’n Flick’ it into the undergrowth!

Recent History Meetings
In May we had a very interesting talk on Colby Lodge by Steve Whitehead.
For our June meeting we finalised the pictures that were to go in our new book.
Our July trip was to the Hywel Dda Centre at Whitland—our previous one a few years ago had been a wash-out (weather-wise)—funnily enough so was this one!
There was no meeting in August but work continued on the book draft.
In the September meeting we discussed the closure of the church and what items we would like to have included in a booklet, as well as what photographs to use.
In October we were joined by members of the relatively newly formed Amroth History Group.
In November we have no meeting but will go for a Christmas lunch at Red Roses, joined by our friends from Amroth History Group.
There will be no meeting in December.
Our next meeting will be on:
Tuesday 19th January 2010 at 7.30pm.

The road from Lanteague (Mountain) Chapel down to the Captain’s Pond.
Grassy Lane
The lane which travels east towards Rose Cottage from part-way down the road from the Captain’s Pond to Ledgerland.
Allen’s Lane
The road south past the Old School Garden to Rose Cottage.
Roman Road
The old lane which travels eastwards and comes out behind the village hall, afterwards crossing the A477 before doing a loop and crossing back at the corner of the garage to go northeast towards the church and onwards past Oxford to the parish boundary. It has been called the “Roman Road” for many years but no historical basis has been found for the name.

TRIBUTE TO….
Roy James 831468 sue01@mypostoffice.co.uk
In June the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy were commemorated.
Below we remember one of our own who lost his life at that time:-
John Mason of Ruelwall was called up for War Service in 1943. In January 1944 he was promoted from Stoker to Stoker 1st Class. John was 23 years old when he was killed on 14th June during the Normandy invasions in 1944.
Stoker Mason, on Landing Barge Oil No 6, sailed with the 34th landing barge flotilla from Poole in Dorset, heading for the American UTAH beach in Normandy. Records show that on the 14th June a Stoker was lost, with no known grave.
John Mason appears to have been the only casualty on that barge and is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent.
John’s widow Eileen (Oriel) unveiled a Memorial Tapestry in Llanteg Hall in 2004. Eileen Oriel (née Allen and later Mason) was born at Ruelwall Farm on 18 Nov 1922 and died 25 Oct 2008 aged 85.
John and Eileen Mason had two children - son David Alan Mason (called Alan), who married Caroline (née Callnon) and have a son Andrew and now live at Carlands, Llanteg, and a daughter Barbara Ann who married Arthur Howells, who have a daughter Margaret and son Roger, and who live at Blaenwaun, Whitland.

TAVERNSPITE SCHOOL
Headteacher—Kevin Phelps School—01834 831691
The summer term was busy and eventful at Tavernspite School. We are very proud of our
pupils and of their many achievements.
Some of their many highlights recently include:
Healthy Schools Award – We went through a rigorous assessment process by the LEA Health Promotion Scheme to win the Phase 5 Healthy Schools Award. The assessment team
interviewed the children and were taken on a tour of the school by the School Council. They were very impressed by the Healthy Schools initiatives that we have operating at school.
Sculpture Competition – The children of Class 3 entered a sculpture competition organised by ‘The Saints and Stones Group’. They produced an outstanding sculpture of pilgrims on a
pilgrimage and won first place!! They travelled to St. David’s Cathedral on the 10th of July for a special presentation ceremony.
Film Animation Awards – Class 2 made an animated film in their IT lessons and entered it into the Pembrokeshire Film Animation Awards. This very clever piece of film making won the Best Newcomer Award at the Pembrokeshire Film Festival.
Cross-Country - About 40 of our pupils
represented the school at the Dyfed Cross Country Championship held at The Showground, Carmarthen. All of the runners gave of their best and there were some outstanding achievements.
Toby Phelps, Nia Walters and Aron Ebsworth were selected to represent Dyfed against West Glamorgan in the Year 6 cross-country championships at Swansea. The Dyfed
Cross-Country team were eventual winners.
Rugby — Our rugby team won the Urdd Pembrokeshire Contact Rugby Tournament in April and then gained further success winning the Bancyfelin 7s tournament, a competition that started with 20 teams including many from Carmarthen, Llanelli and Burry Port. It is the first time that this tournament has been won by a Pembrokeshire School. It really was an excellent
achievement.
Girls Cricket Team – Our Girls Cricket Team entered and won the Pembrokeshire Girls Cricket Tournament. As Pembrokeshire champions they travelled (along with a coach full of parents, children and supporters) to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff to compete in the Welsh Finals. They played outstanding cricket throughout the tournament, winning all of their games to become the Welsh Champions!!! They were simply amazing and showed wonderful sportsmanship.
Two weeks later the team travelled to Headingley, Leeds, to represent Wales in the UK National Finals. It was a fantastic experience for the children and supporters. They played brilliantly and reached the semi-finals, played on Headingley Cricket Pitch, and ended up third overall in the competition.
To be Welsh Champions and ranked third in the UK is an incredible achievement for
Tavernspite School.
Olympic Athlete visit – We had the wonderful privilege in June of welcoming Paralympic swimming double gold medalist, Eleanor Simmonds MBE to Tavernspite School. She was a real star and came to speak to the children in a school assembly about the forthcoming Green Britain Day and her Olympic successes in the Beijing Games. The children particularly enjoyed seeing (and in some cases holding) Ellie’s Gold medals. As winner of the Eco-School of the Year Award we were one of 12 schools selected throughout Great Britain to host an Olympic athlete so it really was an honour!!
Cerdd Dant group – Our Cerdd Dant group competed in the National Eisteddfod at the
M illennium Centre, Cardiff. They performed brilliantly and reached the final stages gaining 3rd place overall. Their final performance and presentation was televised on S4C. We had some TV stars at Tavernspite School!!
I am grateful for this opportunity to share with you some of the events and successes of Tavernspite School in this newsletter. If you wish to know anything else please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Llanteg Bowls
Ann Newman 811160 mailto:ann.newman@btopenworld.com
Meet on Mondays & Thursdays 7.00pm at Llanteg Hall
Sadly, we have not got off to a very good start with our first couple of matches this season. I won't give the scores, but we have been beaten each time so far!
However everyone is doing their best and getting to practices whenever possible and trying to fit their holidays in accordingly. We do have two of our best players away who will miss quite a few games, but the stalwarts will carry on and do their utmost to get some good scores under our belts.
As usual we would be very happy to see some new members and our door is always open on a Monday and Thursday evening from 7.00pm, so do come along and join us. We are a friendly lot and would love to see you.

Badgers Bowls
Stewart Howe 811509 mailto:stewhowe@btinternet.com
Meet on Tuesdays & Fridays 7.00pm at Llanteg Hall
LEAGUES 2008/2009
The Badgers teams finished the season in 5th position in the Main League and 4th in the Presidents League. This placed the Badgers teams in the top half of the two leagues, which is good considering the high standard of bowls played in the leagues. However, we failed to pick up any trophies this season!
SEASON 2009/2010
At the AGM held in June 2009 a new Captain, Nigel Griffiths, was elected. Having thanked Joyce Howe for the last two years as Captain, Nigel also said he would do all possible to continue the improvements.
SEASON TO DATE
What I want to know is "what is Nigel putting in the tea?". The league team, after their first 4 games have scored a maximum of 32 points and are obviously heading their league with the best start they have ever had.
The Presidents team, after their first 4 games are currently 8th in the league. A voice from the Presidents team was heard to say "Nigel we want some of what the League team are drinking"! It worked! In our 5th game against Welfare we picked up the maximum 8 points!
The competitions "County" and "Red Card" singles, pairs, triples and rinks start soon at Heatherton, so the Badgers are working to achieve equal or more success this coming season. These are great events and anyone who likes a bit of friendly competition will love it. They are all round robin starts so you always get a few games in the day. Must be Welsh SMB affiliated to enter.
In addition on the competition front there is the Gerry Laugharne Triples on 24th October and the Open Pairs Competition on 12th December. All are welcome.
If you have any queries please call or email me.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Jonathan Roberts, Sandy Grove, who ran the Edinburgh Marathon on 31st May in 5hrs and 7mins. It was Jonathan’s first full marathon and also a very hot day—but he still looked quite fresh at the end—despite having some sunburn (but he fared better than those with heatstroke!).
Jonathan raised over £500 for the Hope for Children charity.
Congratulations to our Wanderer’s Rest darts players who were recognised at their Presentation Evening in the summer.
As members of the Kilgetty and District Darts League our recognised players were:
Veteran Singles Winner - Dai Vale (The Folly)
Veteran Doubles Winners - Dai Vale and Hugh Owen
180 Trophy - Simon Egginton (Llanteg Park).
Help for Heroes’— Kevin Phelps from Surfhaven ran a half marathon in Cardiff on 18th October in aid of Help for Heroes, finishing in 1hr 51mins.
If anyone wishes to add their money to this charity and support Kevin’s efforts please send your cheques along to him made payable to ‘Help for Heroes’.
Congratulations to Carolyn Smith on graduating from Aberystwyth with a B.Sc Honours in Countryside Management. Carolyn is the daughter of Dilys and Phil

Epilepsy Fundraising
Members of the Avenue Centre collectively swam over 240 lengths and in the process raised over £200 for local and national good causes.
Well done to Andrew Mason of Carlands, Llanteg, who raised £61 for the British Epilepsy Association.
(Andrew also got to have his picture taken at Harry Potter’s famous Shell House at Freshwater West—the day before it was dismantled!)
The Welsh Assembly Government and Hybu Cig Cymru held a very successful Demonstration of Electronic Identification Open Day with Darren James at Rose Park Farm, Llanteg on 9th July.
Congratulations to Battlefield Live for being nominated in the Pembrokeshire Tourism Awards 2009 in two categories: best marketing campaign and exciting new business. The results were announced at a dinner on October 16th and they won the Exciting New Business/Owner Award. It was a very glamorous evening and there were lots of contenders. All the winners were interviewed by Radio Pembrokeshire.
Jan Harland and family of Hazelwood would like to say a big 'thank you' for all the support given to the MacMillan Cancer Support coffee morning which was held at home on Friday 25th September. A total of £256.50 was raised.
Also another big 'thank you' for all those who have sponsored Jan and the rest of the family for the Cancer Research 10K run which was held on
Sunday 11th October in Bute Park, Cardiff. So far Jan has raised a total of £1302! This makes the family total up to £3400 (Steve’s sisters and family who travelled from Cornwall and London to take part in the run had all been sponsored). One last thank you from her husband Steve who appreciates all the best wishes received from friends in the village whilst he undergoes his treatment.

NEW ZEALAND CONNECTIONS
NEW ZEALAND CONNECTIONS
Mr John James of Hafod Haf had a surprise when posting a letter on 23rd
September in Llanteg. He met a lady and her husband who had travelled all the way from New Zealand to visit the house where her ancestors came from—namely
Craig-y-Borian, which is now the property of the National Trust.
However the lady in question, Jill (née Severne), could not locate the premises, much to her disappointment. After providing some Welsh hospitality, John took Jill and her husband to Craig-y-Borian where she expressed her immense joy upon being at the premises of her great grandfather, Francis Severn, who was involved in the ‘wooden horse’ (ceffyl pren) scandal in about 1852. Mr Severn had been involved in an affair with the governess of his children - Caroline Bingham Yelverton. Francis’s wife Mary decided to make an example of the girl, and paid a gang of local men who, in
disguise, paraded the girl from Craig-y-Borian to the Folly Cross, through Amroth and Summerhill and back to Craig-y-Borian, fastened to the ‘wooden horse’ - a ladder used as a stretcher.
However Mary’s plan backfired as her husband Francis eloped with the governess the following day, living in Ireland before travelling to New Zealand where they settled and apparently became well-respected teachers. Francis appears to have died in 1900 aged 88 years and was buried at Havelock, New Zealand. A fascinating end to an intriguing piece of local history.
The Wooden Horse story is on the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southwest and is in our village history book Llanteg Turning Back the Clock.

Having Water Problems?
The Village Hall has received some complaints about the quality of the drinking water (chemical/TCP taste and smell).
Is anyone else experiencing these problems? We know of one person who uses bottled water to drink because of the smell/taste of the water from the tap.
Please let Sue know on 831468 or email mailto:sue01@mypostoffice.co.uk
